Looking for a property in a sunny, high-altitude ski resort with a vibrant summer season and easy access to Italy? Why not consider investing in a property in Montgenèvre? Set at 1,850m in the Hautes-Alpes, close to Serre Chevalier, Montgenèvre has an enviable location on the Franco-Italian border just over an hour’s drive from Turin airport.
Montgenèvre is part of the Via Lattea ski domain, one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the world, encompassing seven resorts across the French and Italian Alps. What’s more, with 80% of the slopes above 1,900m and favourable local conditions, you can enjoy world-class skiing five out of twelve months a year.
When compared to resorts of a similar altitude in other ski domains such as the Three Valleys, Properties for sale in Montgenèvre have a lower entry point, making it an attractive alternative. Plus, it has the benefit of being located on the Franco-Italian border which means you can easily pop over to Italy for heliskiing or dinner. Montgenèvre offers a vibrant summer season, featuring activities like golf, hiking, biking, and more. Owning a property here not only provides a gateway to active summer getaways but also presents a lucrative opportunity to generate rental income outside the resort’s long ski season. As seen in our Summer in the French Alps report, the Alps are becoming increasingly popular for summer breaks and we expect this trend to continue.
Located at the heart of the Via Lattea ski domain, Montgenèvre has an outstanding location as it is connected to the fifth-largest ski domain in the world, allowing you to enjoy high-altitude, snow-sure skiing in both France and Italy.
Last year, Montgenèvre unveiled a brand-new 10-seat cable car at the Rocher de l'Aigle which whisks you up to the summit three times faster than its predecessor, allowing for more time on the slopes. Next year a new high-altitude chairlift on the Italian side will be built for an easier connection with the Italian side of the domain without needing to go down the valley to make the transfer. While Montgenèvre has abundant snowfall, the resort increased the main water reservoir last year to further bolster artificial snow production.
Montgenèvre has long been a significant crossroads, historically serving as a vital communication pass between Italy and France. Dating back to the Roman Empire, this pass was a major route, famously used by Julius Caesar during his invasion of France in 58 BC. Fast forward to 1907, Montgenèvre made history again by hosting France's first international ski competition, marking the birth of the resort. Today, it stands as one of the largest resorts in the Southern Alps. The resort also gained international recognition as a venue during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
Montgenèvre has impressive credentials as a ski resort with access to 400km of slopes, 80km of Nordic skiing and a snow park. A Famille Plus resort, Montgenèvre offers activities for all the family to enjoy off the slopes too such as a 3,500 sqm aquacentre and the Luge Monty Express which has been crowned the longest toboggan ride in Europe and is open throughout all four seasons. During the summer, Montgenèvre offers 300km of mountain bike and walking trails to explore, a bike park and a 9-hole golf course.
