INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

In recent years, Estrela has undergone significant infrastructure developments.

One of the major projects was the renovation of the Jardim da Estrela, a beautiful garden where you will find families going for walks and exercuse groups making the most of the green space. The renovation included the restoration of its historic buildings and the installation of new benches and lighting.

Another important development in Estrela was the construction of a new metro station, which provides easy access to other parts of Lisbon. Additionally, the neighborhood's streets have been repaved and new bike lanes have been added to encourage sustainable transportation.

HISTORY

Estrela is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon, Portugal, with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The area was initially inhabited by wealthy families who built grand palaces and gardens, including the famous Jardim da Estrela.

In the 18th century, a massive basilica was constructed in Estrela, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The basilica is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and remains one of the neighbourhood's most iconic landmarks.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Estrela became a fashionable neighborhood, attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals. Many of the grand palaces were converted into embassies and cultural institutions, such as museums and libraries.

THE AREA TODAY

Inspired by English romantic gardens, Jardim da Estrela was built to provide a green open space where people are able to relax, have a picnic or spend an afternoon watching the world go by. The gardens stretch along the only flat part of the neighbourhood, while the surrounding streets slope down towards the River Tejo and the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Alcantara and hip design district, Santos.

The imposing Basilica da Estrela is a famous Catholic temple that stands out for its beauty and marks the meeting point of many groups, right in front of Jardim da Estrela.
